Tip was raised by his Grandmother and lived in the house with his grandmother and his great-grandmother. Tip’s room was a small attic bedroom with a widow and a view of the street. His little window looking down on the street must have been his inspiration to travel and work in distant places in his adult life. In his commercial drafting career Tip was employed by the State of Alabama and worldwide companies like Brown & Root and Raytheon. He was involved in projects from Germany to Houston and Denver and parking decks to nuclear plants. Tip’s career began with a slide-rule and ended with Computer Aided Design, quite a difference in technology during those forty years. His travels carried him from Europe to the Islands in the Pacific and from coast to coast in the USA and into Mexico. Tip’s vacations often included his children and grand-children and they have many stories to tell of places like Disney World in California. Tip’s life growing up in Troy was not always easy. He learned early on that working hard and applying himself was important. He needed a bicycle for his first job as a newspaper deliverer and his grandmother Horn secured a loan at Troy Bank & Trust which Tip repaid as promised. At least two bicycles were purchased and worn out in this manner delivering papers. Thrill Hill on Pine Street was on his route and as all boys would do, Tip challenged speed and gravity as he tried to set new records on those bicycles. He had many stories to tell about his days of growing up with Robert Jones and Cecil Parks along with many other kids in the neighborhood. These stories included Halloween pranks involving paper bags on porches or pulling more innocent tricks on his grandmother and great-grandmother (one of these involved a cigar box filled with pebbles pulled by a string under her bed at night and causing her plenty of fright). Tip grew up in Troy and attended church at South-Side Baptist with his family and Graduated from Troy High School in 1956. There are other stories to tell involving automobiles and senior trips to Washington D.C., but with grand-children in our presence these are better left out. Tip married on May 21st 1962 and had two girls. Rhonda Kay was born on May 2nd 1963 and Paula Virginia was born on May 16th 1965. These girls have many fond memories of their dad while growing in Montgomery and Houston. Tip was baptized and was a member of Cloverdale Church of Christ in Montgomery and Telephone Road Church of Christ in Houston. Tip was always good-hearted and kind and never refused to help anyone in need. Many people were aided by his generosity. He spent his later years fishing, reading novels, working cross-word puzzles, playing Rook and Rummy on the computer and spoiling his grand-children.

I was going through my awkward teen years, and the rest of the gang was younger than me. Dalton was still a “Pokemon Fanatic.” Kathryn still played with Barbies, and Josie still had lingering curls from her Shirley Temple days. We had just finished our boring, seven-hour school day at Pike-Atraz and, as far as we were concerned, we were about to go spend another boring afternoon at Grandpa Tip’s house. Little did we know… We pulled into the yard in Grandpa Tip’s sporty, bright-red Xterra and climbed out of the car. The four of us kids sat on the porch to munch on our snacks Grandpa Tip had bought us from the BP gas station. We waited for him to go into the house to watch his favorite shows, so we could play “Hide and Seek” in the back yard. I was voted on to close my eyes, count to twenty, and find the others. Very slowly, I began to count. When I opened my eyes I looked into the woods, and there was the strangest thing I’d ever seen—a big, black panther! I blinked really hard in disbelief and watched the huge, jungle cat. It was walking very slowly across the leaves on the ground. Its strong tail swung lightly with every step of its gigantic paws. I watched its shoulder blades move up and down in rhythm as it strode forward. It was looking at something…..where was everyone else? I jerked my head to the right and saw Dalton, Kathryn and Josie hiding behind a big pile of sticks in the woods. They were looking at me and didn’t see the beast approaching. “Ya’ll get over here!” I shouted. “What?” “Panther! Run to the porch!” I was flailing my arms around like I had flipped my lid. They darted out of the woods and to the porch, panting, “What is it?” I pointed to the woods at the panther, which was now almost out of sight. They gasped. Kathryn saw it first and said, “Go get Grandpa Tip.” Dalton and Josie ran into the house. What was taking Grandpa Tip so long? Just a few more steps, and the panther would be clear out of eyesight. Reluctantly, Kathryn and I ran into the house. “Grandpa Tip! Grandpa Tip! We saw a Panther! It’s in the backyard!” Grandpa Tip was looking at us like we were crazy. Now I understood why he didn’t come outside. He wasn’t about to let a group of mischievous kids fool him. He laughed, “Ya’ll ain’t seen no panther!” We argued with him in our excited voices, “Yes we did! We did!” He got out of the chair and walked to the window. Peeping through the blinds into the woods, he said, “See? There’s no panther. Ya’ll are crazy.” We looked—no panther! It had wandered deeper into the woods out of site. *All of us like to laugh about that story now. Grandpa Tip thought for sure us kids were tricking him. Looking back, the four of us running into the house like a bunch of lunatics screaming “Panther!” must have been pretty amusing to Grandpa Tip.

Story shared: My Favorite Memory of Daddy http://skeenfuneralhome.frontrunnerpro.com/runtime/137535/runtime.php?SiteId=137535&NavigatorId=663338&ItemId=1159227&op=tributeFamilyStories&viewOpt=dpaneOnly&gid=story57562 Memories of Daddy Some of our fondest memories of Daddy are centered on Good Friday and Easter. Good Friday being a holiday was always a time when folks were off work and had time to get together. No matter where Daddy lived he always came home for this family time together. On Friday while many folks were planting flowers and gardens, Daddy had his mind on fishing. We had our certain ritual that we always followed. First we would go to Troy to eat at Country Kitchen which was his favorite restaurant. After that we would go to Jab’s to get our bait, any needed fishing tackle, and of course we had to have cokes and snacks for later when the fish were not biting. Mickey’s pond and the bream on the bed were waiting patiently for the worms that we had bought just for them. Daddy’s persistence would always pay off even if no one else was catching any fish. He not only caught the most fish but usually caught the biggest one too. Catching fish was his thing but cleaning them was not. This job was left for Rickey and Mickey while Daddy came inside to rest and cool off. Daddy prepared the hushpuppies but he knew exactly when the fish cleaning job was finished and waited for the right time to come out. To keep the fish odor out of the house our cooking was done outside on the Coleman stove and this gave everyone more outdoor time to be together. When the fish and hushpuppies were done the rest of the family came over to help with the best part-eating the fish and fixings! Saturday was a day for resting unless we got the urge to fish some more. If we fished again these fish were cleaned and frozen for another day. Easter was the day we put on our Sunday finest and went to church at Centerpoint. After church we came home and took pictures with Daddy and the grandkids. The Sunday lunch usually consisted of simple things like hot dogs and chips and potato salad. Most of the time the weather was nice and we would eat outside and go straight into our egg hunt. The kids always wanted enough golden eggs for each of them to have one and Daddy made sure every golden egg was supplied with a five dollar bill inside. Thanks to Daddy these Easter weekends were always special.
